The ETG A Level Economics Programme

>71% of our 2023 cohort scored an A
>90% of our students from RI/HCI/NJC/DHS/EJC/RVHS scored an A

At ETG, we specialise in A Level Economics and we’ve guided countless of H2 and H1 Economics students through our tuition programme towards a Distinction at the A Levels. “U” to “A” success stories here are the norm. Here - the bulk of the classes are taught by top Economics tutor Mr Eugene Toh, our founder who has double Masters degree and featured on the news. ETG Economics students get access to a comprehensive set of Textbooks, Guidebooks, Summary books, Essay banks, TYS answers. We also have an ONLINE Video bank where all lessons are recorded and uploaded - and you have access to these for your exams.

Trouble with understanding content?

Student pain point #1 - cannot understand abstract concepts

There are some concepts that students specifically struggle at. At JC1, most students struggle with Market Structure and concepts relating to costs / revenues diagrams.

Ever feel like what you are learning is alien? That’s understandable considering Economics is one of the only subjects you start on only at the A Levels (very few schools do Economics at the O Levels)

Student pain point #2 - Understand but cannot apply at examinations

At times, you nod in lectures / tutorials almost as if to signal that you understand what your lecturer/tutor is teaching. Then when translating these concepts you supposedly understand at an essay or case study question - you unexpectedly flunk the test. This implies that perhaps your understanding does not translate to exam application.

At ETG - Content learning is simplified

During content lessons, we cover all essential aspects of the curriculum. Adopting a fun & succinct teaching method, Mr Toh often breaks down even the most difficult & complex concepts for easy understanding, and shares useful anecdotes or metaphors to help students internalise and remember the necessary content

APPLICATION OF CONCEPTS TO SINGAPORE & THE REAL WORLD

The ETG Curriculum has a strong focus on giving students a firm understanding on the application of Economic concepts to Real-World contexts. We believe this is essential to inculcate critical thinking skills, and is the key for students to write powerful evaluations & deal with curveball A Level Questions.

From providing contextualised examples to Economic concepts (e.g. Moral Hazard when it comes to Medishield Life), to deepening students’ understanding how Economic policies differ across contexts (e.g. the gradual appreciation of the Singapore dollar via the 'BBC' framework to achieve price stability), we incorporate Real-World examples in every lesson.

Here are 3 videos showing how Mr Toh breaks down concepts in an easy to understand way

Can’t write essays or answer case study questions with precision?

Student pain point #3 - never reaching l3 at essays

“Lacks Economic Rigour”, ”Causal link not clear”
”Evaluation?”, ”Lacks sufficient elaboration”
”Conceptual misunderstanding”

Often scoring only at L1 or L2 for your essays? Many students don’t know what is required to consistently score an L3 for their essays. Most students also do not know what is considered a good evaluation.

Student pain point #4 - always failing to understand what the case study question requires

If the question is 2m and is a trend question. You should be scoring full marks. Ever feel disappointed when you don’t even score full marks for the basic lower order questions?

How about the higher order questions in the case studies? Do they always feel like a hit and miss to you?

What does it take to score more than 21 marks for a 30m case study question?

At ETG - Practice and exam skills are incorporated both within the CORE curriculum & as extra lessons. And you don’t pay extra for the extra lessons.

STRONG emphasis on the development of skills

As part of the ETG Programme, students can enjoy extra practices under the ETG SUPPLEMENT programme with an option for homework to be graded. With consistent practice, and feedback from tutors to review their mistakes, students will be equipped with the requisite skills for writing Essays and tackling CSQs.

ESSAY-WRITING SKILLS & CASE STUDY APPLICATION SKILLS WORKSHOP IS EXPLICITLY Crafted into our Core curriculum

At ETG, every week’s lesson is planned to the last detail to ensure we cohesively and consistently tackle content, skills & exposure while incorporating Exam & A Level Predictions. This was achieved through years of tutoring, tinkering, taking criticisms in stride, and seeking constant updates & improvements.

Mr Toh’s comprehensive understanding of the curriculum is well supported by ex-students’ reviews of his A-Level Predictions.

Our lessons are created specifically to help you tackle the examinations and mr Toh knows exactly how to game it - check out what students say about their a level examinations.

Lack discipline? Don’t know how to study in the most time-efficient manner? Lack support?

Student pain point #5 - You Lack Discipline

There are some of us who need a little more motivation to get started. With so many commitments like CCAs, BGR, Having Fun with friends, studying for multiple subjects can be a challenge for many of us.

Student pain point #6 - You spend hours studying but nothing useful goes in

Some students are hardworking by nature and put in the hours doing revision and yet they find that Economics seem to be a peculiar subject. Why is it that the same techniques that I apply on other subjects don’t seem to work for Economics (hint: econs is not about memorisation)

Student pain point #7 - You don’t have support

You would like someone to check your conceptual understanding. You have some questions to ask while you are revising. You wonder what could be improved with your recent essay that you have done. You look across the room - who can you ask? Apparently, nobody. Many students lack the support to do well.

At ETG - We plan your revision for you

As a default - on a yearly basis, we issue a Revision Booklet during end June. All ETG students will receive it. We help the students structure their revision so they can spend the least amount of time doing what matters the most. Within the revision booklet outlines

  1. Weekly Homework Assignments

  2. What we will be doing in class from July till the exams

  3. A concept checklist that students should revise on a weekly basis

Graded weekly Homework programme

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. But do you know, practice only make senses if

  1. You have someone to explain what are the requirements of the questions and how to break down the answer to you

  2. There is someone to provide feedback on the points that you don’t understand / got it wrong

Consults to save your life - when you need them

Got stuck while studying? Drop Mr Toh a Whatsapp - if he’s awake, he will reply you. Need a more comprehensive understanding of specific essay questions that you don’t understand? Arrange for a face-to-face consult - these are included for all ETG students

How the ETG Programme is designed to game success at the A Levels (and J1 Promo Exams)

An in-depth & experienced analysis of the a level examinations to formulate the game-plan for our tuition curriculum

Mr Toh founded ETG in 2007 and has since taught thousands of students. He has authored textbooks and guidebooks for A Level Economics. When designing the A Level Economics Tuition curriculum, he takes into account specifically
a) what are the specified learning outcomes of the curriculum and the parameters of testing in the curriculum
b) what have been the trends in both topics, current affairs & question types that end up being tested at the A Levels and an analysis behind the mindset of examiners in the specific questions that they test
c) what are the common problems that student face in learning and why are they not learning well to address the exams
With the above - a carefully customised curriculum has been crafted and you can count on it to guide you through your A Levels preparation for Economics

Careful scaffolding to ensure you learn both the basics & also to deal with the curveball questions

We think that students need to start first by getting their foundations right. This means theoretical understanding of the concepts should come first. Many students don’t even realise the difference between ‘non price factors of demand’ vs ‘determinants of PED’ until we highlight it to them. These are important conceptual understanding we aim to build. Along the way, we address curveball questions that come out at the A Levels (check out the Ed Sheeran concert question and the Cross Island MRT question in the TYS). We cover in a comprehensive fashion the A to Z of A Level Economics and we will help you get it right

We take pains to be sure that you are learning what needs to be learnt

We track your learning, through your weekly graded homework programme, as well as a quarterly diagnostic test that all students have to sit for. And if you are not doing well, we ask that you come in for consults with Mr Toh to figure what is wrong.

“THIS APPROACH IS DEFINITELY WORKING…”
- VULCAN POST

"From a pantry stocked with snacks, to McDonald’s for breakfast, to plane tickets as a reward for good grades – Eugene is on his way to making tuition not just enriching, but enjoyable as well.

And with screenshots of students thanking him for their A grades, to a seemingly endless list of positive testimonials – this approach is definitely working."
