the ‘extras’ to make economics fun for students

In Mr Toh’s view, Economics is actually a fun and very ‘real-world’ subject, where students should be able to apply what they learn in class to make sense of the world and understand why events unfold the way they do. Students should also be able to utilise the Decision-Making Framework taught in Economics to make well-informed, logical decisions to better their lives.

In a bid to make learning Economics convenient, Mr Toh runs his own Economics travel vlog, Youtube channel as well as a Podcast on Spotify for students to learn on the go.

The “Coaching” part of being a Tutor

During lessons, Mr Toh shares his life experiences on adversities he has faced to help students makes sense of the difficulties they are going through to help put things in perspective. He constantly focuses on providing students motivation, and is also always ready to help provide a listening ear when students face issues at home or at school.

Teaching Philosophy

Learning Economics can help us make sense of the world around us, make better decisions & be better individuals.

Mr Toh subscribes to the following principles in teaching

  1. Simplify

Here’s what I do- Distill, simplify and bring concepts down to a level where students are first able to easily understand what the specific concept is about.

It is unreasonable to expect students to comprehend the complicated jargon used in Economics intuitively -over time, this becomes a barrier to students’ learning. Therefore, I distill and simplify the concepts into micro-components that students can understand easily then apply correctly in answering examination questions.
Economics is a highly theoretical subject in nature, but what allows students to best assimilate how it is applied to essays and case studies is by demonstrating how the theory is pertinent to what they witness and experience in the real world. This also allows the students to gain interest and develop more awareness in how the world around them works.
It is my vision that students are able to apply their improved critical thinking and analytical skills even after they leave school to benefit their chosen fields.

  2. inculcate skills

Various skills are required to competently tackle the A Level examinations. This includes everything from selecting the right question, to identifying question requirements, to time management and to developing an insightful evaluation.

Learning Economics is akin to playing with building blocks. Students must first consolidate a strong foundation in their theoretical and technical understanding. Then, they add on to the structure by acquiring the requisite skills to apply the theory that they have mastered. From there, it is a matter of progressive and incremental improvements to the structure with targeted practices of sufficient frequency, depth and diversity that allow them to tackle their areas of weaknesses while strengthening their assets.

Rome was not built in a day. In our programme design – which is constantly revised and updated to suit the needs of students each year – we have a detailed roadmap with clear checkpoints and desired outcomes for students to follow systematically, guiding them every step of the way in the marathon that is the A Levels.

  3. Ensure help is always within reach

At Economics At TuitionGenius, we focus on every student as we strongly believe that every student matters. This simple but core student-centric philosophy drives my teaching approaches and business practices.

I believe that every student should have access to my time and resources. Students may book one-to-one consultations with me at no extra charge, and I am often up till 2 a.m. replying their quick queries. When they come to me with their school assignments, I guide them through the necessary content and techniques required. I always wants students have the best possible assistance they need in order to drive their learning.
Students who need additional help or are not meeting expectations in milestone assessments are given the further guidance they need to catch up.
